See No Evil ...

The popular proverb "See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil" refers to one who doesn't want to get involved in a sticky situation and looks the other way, feigning ignorance. But did you ever wonder where the proverb originated? Well, no one knows for sure. One explanation is that it came from Japan. The Japanese phrase "sanbiki no saru" literally means "three monkeys." The monkeys symbolize the proverb with one covering its eyes (see no evil), one its ears (hear no evil) and one its mouth (speak no evil).
